In certain athecate genera the skeleton of the hydrorhiza is internal and comprises internal anastomosing ribs, or trabeculae, which in some species bear spines. Such modification of the skeletal component of the colony is greatest in Solanderia and Chitina in which the trabeculae form and support an erect and branching stem covered on the outside by unprotected epidermis.
