Description: Small bushy colonies with long primary polyp producing many secondary polyps.by lateral budding. Polyps retractile. Sclerites are thorny rods and spindles, often branched. Some sclerites may be fused. Colour of colonies whitish. Zooxanthellae absent.
Habitat: turbid coastal areas.
Range: Atlantic, Indo-Pacific.
Remarks: Species often have a thin brownish sponge growing on the surface of the colony. The Atlantic Carijo risei (Duchassaing and Michelotti, 1860) is a significant fouling organism.
