Total number of species estimated: 50.

Description: Colonies forming fans, many with anastomoses. Main branches always with short side branches. Colour of colonies red-brown, yellow. Surface of coenenchyme with thornscales with about three thorn- or leaf-like projections. Internal sclerites are spindles and irregular types. Zooxanthellae absent.

Habitat: Reef slope.

Range: Tropical Indo-Pacific.

Remarks: Formerly, the genus Echinogorgia was used in a very broad sense, including as well Menella as Trimuricea.
