Type species: Halomitra pileus (Linnaeus, 1758).
Total number of species estimated: 2.
Characteristics: Corals zooxanthellate, free-living, round, polystomatous by additional mouths around the initial one at the centre. Maximum diameter 63 cm. Septal teeth angular or club-shaped, each covered by a vertical row or ridge of granulations. Corallum wall perforate; detachment scar usually absent. Costae show long, sharp costal spines with sharp granulations at their tips (Hoeksema, 1989). Colour oker, cream to light brown, in one species with purple margin and white mouths.
Ecology: Most common on reef slopes in clear water.
Range: Indo-West Pacific.
Additional remarks: In some areas, regenerated fragments may be encountered more frequently than complete specimens with a distinct central mouth.
